How to supervise
All under-16s must be properly supervised when climbing with us. Here's how supervision works.
Getting started
New climbers aged 7–15 and their supervisors should start with a First Time Climb induction session, designed to teach the skills needed to boulder safely. After that, parents can supervise their children without an instructor present, as long as they meet the requirements below.
Supervision ratios
- One non-climbing adult supervisor per two children, or one climbing adult supervisor per one child.
- For under-9s, one-to-one supervision is strongly recommended.
- Family groups of more than three children aren't permitted unless accompanied by a Boulder Brighton instructor.
- Close, active supervision is essential. Supervisors and their climbers must stay together at all times, not watch from a seat.
Registration & booking
Supervisors complete the normal adult registration so they get the same safety information as everyone else. It's free if done online in advance and only needs doing once every two years. Any session involving a supervised child must be booked ahead.
Young adults (16–17)
Young adults aged 16 or 17 need signed parental consent to use the centre, but otherwise climb under the same terms as other adults. A parent or guardian must complete a registration and consent form before their first visit.
